In the town of San Juan, Southern Leyte, nature and legend intertwine at the summit of Mt. Cabalian. While many volcanoes are known for their destructive power, this active stratovolcano is celebrated for a different reason: the serene, high-altitude sanctuary known as Lake Danao.

A Legend Written in Water
The beauty of Lake Danao is more than just geological; it is deeply rooted in local folklore. According to the elders of San Juan, the lake is a monument to a faithful wife named Danao.

The story tells of Datu Toktok, a powerful leader who lived at the mountain’s peak—an area lowlanders called Kang Toktok (Toktok’s place). His wife, Danao, was famous for her goddess-like beauty, which unfortunately led to her abduction by Toktok’s friend, Magkasa.

The legend says that as Toktok pursued them, a violent storm shook the mountain. Magkasa was struck by lightning, and Danao fell into a deep cliff. Before she passed away, she assured Toktok of her innocence. Overcome with grief and regret, the Datu prayed to the gods to keep his wife on the mountain forever. In response, a mountain peak vanished, and in its place appeared the beautiful blue lake that carries her name today.

The Science of the Summit
Beyond the myths, Mt. Cabalian is a fascinating natural site. Rising to a summit of approximately 900 meters above sea level, it remains an active volcano. The heat from the volcano’s core creates numerous hot springs in the surrounding area, which serve as a natural reminder of the geothermal energy sitting beneath the lush greenery.

Lake Danao itself sits at an elevation of 733 meters above sea level and measures roughly 500 meters wide. Its calm, blue waters offer a sharp contrast to the rugged, volcanic terrain that surrounds it.

Planning Your Journey
For travelers and photographers looking to document this hidden gem, reaching the lake is an adventure in itself.

Location: The lake is located approximately eight kilometers from the San Juan town proper.

The Route: Travelers can take a seven-kilometer concrete road ascending from Barangay Dayanog.

The Final Trek: The last leg of the journey is a one-kilometer trek that must be traversed by foot, making it accessible to most hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Whether you are drawn by the scientific mystery of an active volcano or the romantic tragedy of local legends, Lake Danao at Mt. Cabalian offers a unique perspective on the wild beauty of Southern Leyte.
