Mt. Cabalian Update: Recent Earthquakes and How to Stay Safe

In this latest update, Mt. Cabalian has shown new seismic activity, making it more important than ever to understand how to stay safe. While Southern Leyte is known for its stunning landscapes, the recent tremors recorded by VolcanoDiscovery—including 16 earthquakes in the last 30 days—remind us that we live in a dynamic volcanic region.

Understanding the Recent Tremors
The recent activity near Mt. Cabalian has varied in intensity. Of the 16 recorded quakes, two reached a magnitude of 4.1, which is often strong enough to be felt by residents in San Juan and Anahawan. While most of these events are tectonic, caused by the shifting of local fault lines, their proximity to an active stratovolcano requires our full attention.

Historically, Mt. Cabalian has been quiet since the 1820s, but “quiet” does not mean inactive. The geothermal heat that powers the Mainit Hot Springs and warms the waters of Lake Danao is a constant sign that the volcano remains a living part of our environment.

Your Safety Checklist
Preparation is the best defense against natural uncertainty. To protect your family, focus on these three pillars of safety:

The Survival Go-Bag: Ensure every family member has a bag ready with at least three days of water, non-perishable food, and essential medications. Most importantly, include N95 masks to protect against potential volcanic ash, which can be harmful to the lungs.

Home Hardening: Check your home for heavy furniture that could tip over. Secure bookshelves and cabinets to the wall to prevent injuries during a sudden jolt.

Stay Informed: Rely only on official sources. Follow PHIVOLCS-DOST and your local Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) for real-time alerts.

By staying informed and prepared, we can appreciate the beauty of Mt. Cabalian while ensuring our community remains resilient. Stay safe, stay updated.
