From Tacloban, take a bus or van to Sogod. Then, ride a jeepney/Bus to San Juan, Southern Leyte. From there, a habal-habal (motorbike taxi) will take you to Barangay Danayog, the jump-off point for the trek. From there, you’ll need to arrange for a local guide and transportation to the mountain’s base for the hike.

One of the things that made Lake Danao feel so mysterious to me was the local belief that visitors should stay quiet while camping, as too much noise could disturb the balance of nature. According to the stories, if the surroundings were disrupted, fog and clouds would suddenly roll down and completely cover the lake, almost as if nature itself was hiding it from view. It always sounded a bit funny, but it also felt like a quiet reminder from nature to show respect for the place and its hidden wonders.
